Writing About Past Trauma

This worksheet outlines the process of writing your trauma story as part of the healing process for PTSD. This is sometimes called a trauma narrative. This is typically done while working with a therapist.

Benefits of the Written Trauma Narrative

Many people report that writing about their trauma and facing their fears and memories is the most helpful part of PTSD therapy.  The trauma narrative, or account of the trauma, is commonly used in the following therapies:

  • Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)
  • Prolonged Exposure (PE)
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy

Other terms for this process include the written trauma account, imaginal exposure, trauma exposure, facing your trauma, or PTSD narrative.

Using the Worksheet

This worksheet reviews the process of the trauma narrative, and offers options for working through the event. It's recommended that this be combined with CBT processing of thoughts about the trauma. You can find a complete set of worksheets to support you or your clients through this process, available here.
